IV Pentecost! 4th Sunday after Pentecost

Greetings in Christ Jesus,

IV Sunday after Pentecost
Spiritually and physically raising us from the dead, and stopping the blood.

(Fourth Sunday of the cycle of six Sundays)

During this week:
At the Beginning of Night read the Gospel of St. John throughout this week.
Matins: Week IV throughout this week, for the verses before the Second Canticle of Moses, the Song of the Three Youths, and the Matins Resurrection Gospel.

The Divine Liturgy:

Old Testament: Is. 41:8-14 [S] (... For I am the Lord thy God, Who takes you by the hand, and says to you: Fear not, I have helped you...)

Epistle: Romans 6:1-11 (Dead to sin but alive in Christ: ...Know you not that all we who are baptized in Christ Jesus are baptized in his death? For we are buried together with him by baptism into death; that, as Christ is risen from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we also may walk in newness of life...)

Gradual: Psalm 78 (Heb. 79) O God, the heathens are come into Your inheritance (This is a case where the Psalm asks for revenge, but Jesus Christ gives mercy. At least it asks for self-control: “Remember not our former iniquities; let Your mercies speedily prevent  us: (quickly overtake us) for we are become exceeding poor. Verse 13 may be used as the Alleluia. As in many Psalms, the end of the Psalm is much more calm. But we Your people, and the sheep of Your pasture, will give thanks to You for ever: We will show forth Your praise, unto generation and generation.)

Gospel:  Matthew 9:18-26 (Raising the ruler’s daughter from the dead, healing the woman with an issue of blood for twelve years, and the woman’s faith healed her. Jesus Christ healed women, raising girls from the dead, and healing afflictions.)

Friends,

The prophecy that we read in this chapter of Isaiah is twofold; firstly, it is fulfilled at the fall of Babylon and the return of the Jews out of their exile. Secondly, it is fulfilled through the Apostles and the church. The church, or Christianity, has survived from the beginning through the most severe attacks that has been thrown at her. The attacks not only came from outside but from inside as well and they continue to do so. True Christians must keep watch, no one group, denomination, true church, one that existed from the beginning church, one that has returned to the roots of Christianity church, no one group is immune from attack either from the outside or the inside.

We must be ever vigilant, grace abounds but sinning more in order for more grace to abound is insanity. This was once believed and so spoken of by St. Paul. If we live in sin, even if grace is abounding, we cannot be in union with God. Darkness cannot be in union with light. One comes and the other goes. If we are dead to sin then we are no longer held captive by it. Our human nature has not died, we must be free from sinning, we cannot move to sin when under grace. Being baptized in Christ is not merely some outward sign of our giving ourselves to Jesus. It is not simply making a public announcement that we love Jesus. We are born again into a spiritual life that is in union with the risen Christ. This is how we are to live, shun sin, grow in the spirit. Sin is crucified, we are not sin in nature, sin is what we do. In Baptism we have crucified the old man as it is called which is literally the sin that clothed us. We are born again to live a new life, a resurrected life and we can do this through Jesus the Christ.

Our gospel shows us that God alone has authority over life and death. Murderers cannot murder without the knowledge of God. Tyrants cannot rule with hate without the knowledge of God. Death and life are in God’s hands and Jesus has the power of life because He is of one essence with the Father. The Gospel shows us the power and authority that Jesus has in life. Jesus heals. Faith my friends, this is necessary, hope that there is a better life even when we do die in the body, love or charity covers all things. We must hold to the gospel and we must love until the end. We do not know the end but one thing for sure, we will end if in no other way at the moment than in our body. We will die. Many will pass from this life before the Second coming. Live this life in love for God and neighbor.

As the Psalmist says, we must give thanks to God forever, ‘let Your mercies speedily prevent us (or quickly overtake us) ’, this happens in love, the love of God for us. He shows us mercy when we come to Him.

We must live our faith in spite of those who make the statement that they do not need God in their life to do good. We who believe still need our Savior because we sin everyday whether in thought, word or deed. There is no amount of good that we can do that will erase our sin once we have committed it. There is only our faith in Christ Jesus, our recognition of our sin, our confession, and repentance. This is our faith.

God can do all things; there is no situation that we get ourselves into that God cannot help us out of. Don’t think though that if there is some earthly penalty that we must pay that we will escape this because we suddenly come to God for help. We simply must have the faith and believe. Keep in mind however; God's plan is far above ours. We suffer and we have plenty coming based on what God Himself has in store for us whether it is for purging, for testing, or for reward or necessity for our life. God is in control.

We do not know when this will end and the new beginning will be, in spite of the many modern prophets who make a living selling Jesus and the destruction of the world; we have no clue when it will be. In the meantime, it rains on us all, haters and lovers of Jesus. The sun shines on us all, haters and lovers of Jesus. We remain together in this world until that day. So take a lesson from the readings. Continue to praise and worship Jesus the Christ and the Father through Him. Never cease to pray and live according to the gospel. Allow the Holy Ghost to guide you. Love God with all of your heart, with all of your soul, with all of your mind, and with all of your strength; love your neighbor as yourself. You never know whose life you will change because of this love of God in you.

The light has entered the world and the times; they are a-changing.

If one does not have love for the soul of mankind and the desire that all come to the truth than one does not have Christ in them fully.

Little children, love one another; because this is our Lord’s command and if you fulfill this, nothing else is needed. Through love and because of love we will follow all of the commandments that we have been given. They are written on our hearts by the hand of Almighty God. We simply need to see them within us and follow.

Remember; if we confess our sins and repent, he is faithful and just, to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all iniquity.

May the peace of our Lord Jesus the Christ be with you throughout this day and the rest of your life. May the Holy Spirit fill us all to overflowing so that everyone in whose path we cross may receive a blessing from our Lord Jesus the Christ.

In Christ.

III Pentecost (3rd Sunday after Pentecost)

III Pentecost
3rd Sunday after Pentecost!

Greetings in Christ Jesus,

(Third Sunday of the cycle of six Sundays)
During this week:
The Beginning of Night: read the Book of Acts throughout this week.
Matins: Week III throughout this week, for the verses before the Second
Canticle of Moses, the Song of the Three Youths, and the Matins Resurrection Gospel

Old Testament: Isaiah 40: 28-41:4 (“Know you not, or have you not heard? The Lord is
the everlasting God, Who has created the ends of the earth: He shall not faint, nor labor,
neither is there any searching out of His wisdom. It is He that giveth strength to the
weary, and increases force and might to them that are not. Youths shall faint, and
labor, and young men shall fall by infirmity. But they that hope in the Lord
shall renew their strength, they shall take wings as eagles... Who has wrought
and done these things, calling the generations from the beginning?

Epistle: Romans 3: 21-4:3 (Justified by faith. The works of God are greater than the
works of men. “What shall we say then that Abraham has found, who is our
father according to the flesh? For if Abraham were justified by works, he
has whereof to glory, but not before God. For what says the scripture?
Abraham believed God; and it was reputed to him unto justice.” Gen. 15:6)

Gradual: (Psalm):  Psalm 76/ Hebrew 77 I cried to the Lord with my voice (Verses 12-14
as the Alleluia. This Psalm asks and answers: “Your way, O God, is in the holy place: who
is the great God like our God? You are the God that does wonders.
You have made Your power known among the nations: with your arm you have
redeemed Your people, the children of Jacob and of Joseph.”)

Gospel: Matthew 7: 7-11 (Ask and it shall be given to you; seek and you shall find... If
you being evil know how to give good gifts to your children, God the Father in heaven
will give good gifts to those that ask Him. - not as material gifts, but salvation.
And, we can only be saved by the gift of God.)

Friends,

Justified by faith! What does this mean to us today? We are still looking at Justification by Faith today and not our works but the works of God for God’s works are greater than man’s. Friends we can do nothing to earn our salvation, there is no works that we can do to gain heaven and yet by our faith and belief in our Lord and savior Jesus the Christ we will begin a life of works. If we say that there is no God and yet we help people who need help and give money to non-profit organizations who claim to help others; will we see heaven? No! We will not see heaven, we may do some good here but by denying God, claiming that He does not exist we have already separated ourselves from Him and therefore we have no part in Him.

By claiming that Christ Jesus was a good man full of wisdom and good teachings and denying His sacrifice for our salvation, denying that He came from God, taught, died, was buried, rose, and ascended back to God then we have separated ourselves from our Lord and therefore if we do not claim Him how can He claim us? We are not His by our own admission.

It is only by our faith in our Lord Jesus that we can be saved. Our labors are in vain when it comes to our eternity. Even though we may have helped some on earth we have not helped our own eternal soul. This is an issue for today because the saying is; ‘I can do good things all on my own I do not need some god to tell me to be good’, so, my friends, I know that you have seen this written and possibly even heard some speak these words. If possible you may attempt to correct this understanding but if it is not possible it is on them. It is a rare place in what is considered to be the civilized world that the name of Jesus has not been heard.

II Pentecost (Second Sunday after Pentecost)

II Pentecost
2nd Sunday after Pentecost!

Greetings in Christ Jesus,

Epistle: Romans 5: 1-10 (Same reading as the General Lection for the Apostles: another remembrance of All Saints, this time the Holy Fathers of the Church. “Being justified by faith, let us have peace with God…”Also, glory in tribulations… “For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of His Son; much more, being reconciled, shall we be saved by His life.” Again: taking up the cross.)

Gospel: Matthew 6: 19-25 Lay up treasures in heaven, not in earth. “If your eye be single, your whole body shall be full of light.” No man can serve two masters.

Psalm:  Psalm 74/75 “We will praise You, O God: we will praise, and we will call upon Your Name. We will relate Your wondrous works: when I shall take a time, I will judge justices. The earth is melted, and all that dwell therein: I have established the pillars thereof…”

Friends,

Justified by faith! What does this mean to us today? According to today’s epistle we will not be neglected in suffering, we will suffer. We are told to glory or boast in our suffering as well as in our hope of sharing the glory of God. We are told to store up treasure in heaven and not here on this earth. Our heart will be wherever our treasure is, according to the gospel. We have a warning here; 22 the light of your body is your eye. If your eye be single, your whole body shall be lightsome. 23 But if your eye be evil your whole body shall be darksome. If then the light that is in you, be darkness: the darkness itself how great shall it be!

So what is this “justified by faith” meaning? We simply believe and that is it? Regardless of what comes upon us and regardless of our reaction to it; we are justified simply because we believe?  In another scripture we are told that even the demons believe and tremble, are they justified by their belief as well? What does it mean to store up treasure in heaven? Is this simply a matter of believing? I say that it is not.

We believe and have faith that Jesus is true to His word and that we have salvation through Him unto everlasting life in the light of Almighty God, we store up our treasures in heaven by being faithful to the commandments of Jesus; love God first with all of our heart, with all of our mind, with all of our soul, and with all of our strength. Secondly we love our neighbor as our self. It is by doing these two commandments that we begin to store up treasure in heaven by doing for others. Care for people, clothe them, feed them, give them water, pray for them, and comfort them. This is storing up treasure in heaven. By loving and acting out of true love.

It need not be difficult through many rituals, care for one another as our Lord Jesus cared for us. Carry each other’s burdens as best as we can. Of course we are limited often times in what we can actually do but we do what we can and never, ever, neglect prayer for others, this is free to all of us.

Remember that it is Almighty God who judges us; rejoice in His love and care of and for us and do not be so quick to judge, discern what is right and wrong and stay away from the wrong but it is not ours to judge, judgment and discernment are not the same and are often times confused with each other, by discernment we may keep our hearts and our souls pure, by judgment we cast judgment on ourselves as well. By this I mean that we do not determine who goes into eternal damnation and who does not, we discern one who is on the road to eternal damnation but we do not send that one there. That is God’s decision alone.

I Pentecost (First Sunday after Pentecost)

I Pentecost
(1st Sunday after Pentecost!)

 Greetings in Christ Jesus,

This day is also one of two All Saints Days’ in the year.

Epistle: Galatians 6: 8-14 (“For what things a man shall sow, those also shall he reap.” Sow in the Spirit: glory in the Cross of Christ, not the circumcision of the flesh.)

Gospel: Matthew 16: 24-27 “Then Jesus said to His disciples: if any man shall come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me…for the Son of Man shall come in the glory of His Father with His angels: and then will He render to every man according to his works.” Faith, sin of individuals and nations.

Psalm: 147/148 “praise the Lord, O Jerusalem: praise your God, O Sion. Because He has strengthened the bolts of your gates; He has blessed your children within you. Who has placed peace in your borders: and fills you with the fat of corn. Who sends forth His speech to the earth: His word runs swiftly…” (Altus Prosator may be done for All Saints, or the hymn of the apostles. Also may be Psalm 138/139 O Lord, you test me and know me: You know my sitting down and my rising up:  see All Saints Nov. 1st.)

Friends,

We reap what we sow! If we sow to the flesh we will also reap to the flesh. Therefore we have made no heavenly or spiritual gain. If we want heavenly or spiritual gain we must not sow to the flesh, we must become followers of Jesus; deny ourselves and take up our cross.

If we sow to the flesh in order to gain the whole world and in this we lose our own life, how have we made profit? We must lose our life in the flesh in order to gain our life in the heavenly realm. This is the basic teaching of today’s readings.

Praise the Lord; in all things give glory to God through our Lord and savior Jesus the Christ. All of creation praises the Lord. Man who has a mind and free will has chosen to not praise the Lord but to seek power and glory for himself and to lord himself over all that he is able to lord himself over.

These are the ones who are sowing to the flesh. They seek riches at the expense of others. They care nothing for the struggles of anyone else. Some even say; I can do good all by myself I do not need a god to tell me to help others. Look and see how much I give to the many foundations. I am a good person, I need no one to tell me and I answer to no one.

We must be different than this, love God first with all of your heart, with all of your mind, with all of your soul, with all of your strength. Then love your neighbor as yourself. Then we will be sowing to the spiritual things. Do this in the name of our Lord and savior Jesus. Give up yourself when needed to help someone in need. Do what you are able to do, we all do not have money but we may have bread, we may have a bed, sometimes we may only be able to just simply be there for someone who is in pain whether physical, emotional, or spiritual.

If you are married then give up yourself to care for your family, this means also to instruct them in the ways of the Lord and not to neglect their proper upbringing. Work to support them, love them. If you are single then you must be celibate, you will then have even more time to help others who are not within your family.

Pray always, do not chase after entertainment at the expense of time with the Lord. We will become what we begin and strive for here. If we choose to neglect God then we have taken ourselves away from Him today and in the new world we will be separated from Him because we have separated ourselves from Him here today.

Strive for the true prize that awaits us with patience, faith, perseverance, and diligence. Do not neglect the time here today, it will determine the time tomorrow.
